Ricky Bell was a running back for the University of Southern California and was Tony Dorsett's main competition for the Heisman Trophy in 1976. Despite Bell's impressive stats, including rushing for over 1,700 yards and 13 touchdowns, Dorsett ultimately won the award. Interestingly, Dorsett and Bell both went on to have successful careers in the NFL, with Dorsett being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1994 and Bell being inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2004. Pitt's only Heisman winner, Tony Dorsett, had an incredible college career, rushing for over 6,000 yards and 59 touchdowns during his time at the University of Pittsburgh.

Under Coach Paul Johnson, the Yellow Jackets rallied to a 10-2 record to lead the ACC Coastal division. They went on to face the Clemson Tigers, whom they'd beaten earlier in the year. They managed to top them again 39-34 to win the conference title and move on to the Orange Bowl, where they were beaten by the Iowa Hawkeyes 24-14. In 2011, the Yellow Jackets lost this title as punishment for not cooperating with the NCAA in their investigation to the eligibility of a player that played in said season. He had received some 300 dollars in gifts, which is against the NCAA's rules. Tech said that they did in fact cooperate and did not appreciate the punishment. I can't say I do either.

When Dungy finished his career with Minnesota, he was the Gophers' all-time leader in passing completions, passing yards, and touchdown passes. He went on to win a Super Bowl as a player with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1978, and coaching the Indianapolis Colts to a Super Bowl win in 2007. He became the third man to win both a Super Bowl as a player and a coach, with Mike Ditka and Tom Flores being the other two. Dungy also became the first African-American head coach to win a Super Bowl.
